TEACHING PRACTICE EXPERIENCE
Teaching practice
period is an interesting and a variety experience in my life.It is a period of
two and half months experience.I got the the school St.Thomas
H.S.S,Karthikappally for my teaching practice experience.I along with fourteen
students went to St.Thomas H.S.S,Karthikappally.Biji Abraham Sir is the
principal of the school.I got the charge of 8B students.
HISTORY
OF THE SCHOOL
St. Thomas School,
located to the West of Karthikapally junction was established in the year 1919.
The high school was established in the year 1957 while Higher Secondary School
came in to being in the year 2014. The patron Saint of the institution is St.
Thomas Apostle and the patron is H. H Baselios Marthoma Paulose II. The school is
managed by Catholicate and M. D Schools Corporate. The manager is H.G Mathews
Mar Theodosious and The Head Master is Mr. Biji Abraham.
The
High School alone has 1461 students of which 968 are boys and 493 are girls.
The HSS, established in 2014 has 48 students; 34 boys and 14 girls. There is
only commerce branch in the HSS. The School has 12 divisions in UP and 22 in
HS. Around 50 teaching staff provide educational facilities to the students.
PTA
The PTA in St. Thomas
School is very active and meets on a regular basis. They carry out many
activities in the school. The PTA president is Sri. Kuruvila Koshy and the Vice
President is Smt. Shyamala Satheesan. The PTA plays a major role in the
developmental activities of the school.

Leave
The students are
supposed to inform earlier and submit a leave letter to the class teacher if
they planning to take leave. In case absenteeism is unexpected they have to
fill up the leave form in the school
diary and submit it to the class teacher.
Usage
of Gold
The students are not
allowed to wear golden ornaments to school.
Cleanliness
The school authorities
take good care of proper disposal of waste. The students are always monitored
over the maintenance of cleanliness. During the lunch break we could see the
principal walking around to find students throwing around paper bits and food
waste. This is a major initiative from the side of the Head Master towards the
maintenance of school discipline.
Uniform
Boys: White half sleeve
shirt with ash stripes, ash coloured pants and belt.
Girls: White half
sleeve top with ash stripes, ash pants and ash overcoat.
Identity card is a
must.
Contributions of the school towards
students’ personality development
Various activities are
held throughout the academic year towards the improvement of students’
personality. Moral classes are conducted by MGOCSM on every Friday afternoon in
the parish hall. The organisation also conducts various competitions for
students. Two of our fellow teacher trainees were judges to a music and
elocution competition conducted by MGOCSM.
Class discussions,
seminars and elocutions are held in every subject classes. This has inspired
students towards participating in youth festival and winning prizes. These
activities are also a part of Comprehensive and Continuous Evaluation (CCE).
The students actively
participate in science, maths, work experience and other subject exhibitions in
the school, sub district, district and state level. In this academic year St.
Thomas School won the first place in various exhibitions conducted in the sub-
district level.
Though Sanchayika
program is not active the school ensures active student participation in Deepika
Balajanasakhyam and Vidyarangam Kala Sahithyavedi. Three students secured A+
and cash award for Deepika Balajanasakhyam this year. In the sub-district level
St. Thomas achieved first place for ensuring the participation of maximum
number of students.
The student Prime
Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Alappuzha district is from this school.
Abin Jacob Mathew of 10 A is the PM and Aditya Varsha of 7A is the Deputy PM.
Students have shown their intellectual talent in various talent search
examinations. 3 students secured prizes in the Balasahitya Congress this year.
Shankaranarayanan of 9A secured Victor Scholarship and second place in Social
talent search examination this year.
Though the school
doesn’t have a band troupe, the music club is very active. This led to securing
2nd place in various items in the district level competitions. St.
Thomas School students is an inevitable presence at youth festivals and sports
meets. They secured 1st position in sub-district and 5th
in district level. Students appeared at the state level for 3 items and secured
A grade for Parichamuttu. The students of this school ensured their presence at
sports meet in the sub-district, district and zonal level. The items the
students participated include Shuttle Badminton, Football, Volleyball and
Athletics.
Besides participating
in sports and art events the students of this school have made appreciable
presence in social service. There are active participants in junior Red Cross,
scouts and guides, and health and first aid. Classes on health and first aid
are conducted for the students. The school had recently won Fitness Award.
The retired teachers of
the school have installed endowments for meritorious students. There are around
13 such endowments for 9th and 10th standard students.
Alumni Association of the school is also very active a. they meet regularly and
make valuable contributions towards the development of the school.
Conduct of Examinations
The overall charge of
examinations is in the hands of senior teachers. Examinations in an academic
year consist of unit test, monthly test, term and final exams. Internal
evaluations in the form of assignments, projects and seminars are also
conducted in the classes. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation is followed
in the school.
The school development
committee is very active while the School maintenance is done by the
management.
Infrastructural facilities
The computer lab
consists of sixteen computers and a printer. It classes are held twice weekly
–one lab session and one practical. Usually the subject teachers handle the IT
classes. The students are evaluated on their technical skills twice in an
academic year; i.e. in October and March.
Thirty marks out of 50 is given to evaluate the practical skills, 10 for
theory and 10 for continuous assessment. Usually the students are given an
online test out of 40.
The smart room also
acts as the library due to the unavailability of sufficient space. The
resources in the smart room include a projector and laptop. The students are
taken to the smart room and are shown various videos. In language classes
students are shown dramas. Students get the opportunity to use and learn
various softwares. In Maths Geogebra software, Calcium in chemistry, Marble in
Geography and Phet in Physics. Students have to learn two chapters each on
these. Students of 10th standard are taught to use the graphic
software Ink Scape to draw figures in Biology. They are also taught Database
construction and tupi2D animation sofware. On the other hand 8th and
9th standard students are taught to create web pages using
“kompozer”, circuit construction and Gimp drawing software.
As they learn a number
of softwares, the students actively participate in IT related competitions and
have brought home various prizes.
Surveys conducted among
students revealed that they depend on library and internet for doing their
projects and assignments. The school has also ensured the availability of
newspapers for students. The school has laboratories for physics, chemistry and
biology and students are taken to the labs during allotted hours to do
practical. The practical done by students are evaluated under CCE.
Toilets and drinking Water
There are 15 urinals
and 4 latrines for girls. For boys there is 1 latrine and 12 urinals. Drinking
water is sponsored by SBT Haripad branch. The facility is available to the
students in front of the school administrative office during working hours.
The students have a big
playground, football and volleyball ground, assembly ground and space to
temporarily set up shuttle badminton court. Closer to the football ground is
the vegetable garden.
The school has spacious
parking lots. There are 4 school buses at the service of students in mornings
and evenings. Students and teachers have enough sheds to keep their bicycles
and two-wheelers respectively.
